BOARD OF REGENTS
The laws of New Mexico provide for a Board of Regents which is responsible for the governance of the University of New Mexico. The Board’s power to govern the University includes fiduciary responsibility for the assets and programs of the University, establishment of goals and policies to guide the University and oversight of the functioning of the University.
The Board is comprised of seven members who are appointed by the Governor of New Mexico, with the consent of the Senate, for staggered terms of six years except for the student regent who is appointed for a two-year term. The Governor and the Secretary of Education are designated as ex-officio, non-voting members, and the Presidents of the Faculty Senate, Staff Council, Associated Students of UNM, Graduate and Professional Student Association, Alumni Association, and UNM Foundation are non-voting advisors.
The Board holds monthly meetings and annually elects a President, Vice-President, and Secretary/Treasurer. There are three subcommittees: Health Sciences subcommittee, Academic and Student Affairs subcommittee, and Finance and Facilities subcommittee. The President of the Board makes the assignments annually based on the interest of board members and the desire to periodically rotate membership of subcommittees. Each of these subcommittees works closely with the appropriate administrators: Health Sciences with Vice-President of Health Sciences Center; Academic and Student Affairs with, respectively the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Vice-President for Student Affairs; Finance and Facilities with the Vice-President for Business and Finance.
