Policy Rationale
The Budget Committee is one of five (5) committees that comprise the Faculty Senate Business Council, which provides faculty oversight of the business aspects of the University of New Mexico (UNM) including budget, government relations, campus planning, capital projects, etc.
Policy Statement
The Budget Committee has the responsibility to make recommendations to the Faculty Senate for advising the budget officeBudget Leadership Team (BLT) in developing the universityUNM budget. In particular, the functions of the committee include, but are not limited to:
(a) participation in the BLT and BLT sub-committees, including at least one (a1) Committee member appointed to the BLT.
(b) the presentation to the Faculty Senate each September of an analysis ofApril on the previous year's disbursement of incremental resources;Committee’s participation and (b) the developmentwork with the central administration of the university budget for presentation to the regentsBLT.
(At least thirteen facultyFaculty members will be appointed by the Faculty Senate: The optimal Committee will be thirteen (13) members, with (2) two from Arts and Sciences and, if possible, one (1) from each of the following academic areas [where possible given the number of faculty in each area]: Architecture and Planning, Education and Human Sciences, Engineering, Fine Arts, Honors, University Libraries, Law, Anderson School of Management, Medicine (including Dental Hygiene Programs), Nursing, Pharmacy, and PharmacyPopulation Health, and an ex-officio member appointed by the Senior Vice President for BusinessFinance and FinanceAdministration. The terms of office shall be for three (3) years, set up on a staggered basis so that the terms of at least four (4) members will expire each year. The chairperson is elected by the Committee.) Members will be appointed by April for terms starting the following fall. The chairperson is selected by the Committee for a one-year term. That selection will be made at the last meeting of the academic year for the following year.
Applicability
All UNM faculty, including the Health Sciences Center and Branch Community Colleges.
Revisions to the remaining sections of this document may be amended with the approval of the Faculty Senate Policy and Operations Committee in consultation with the responsible Faculty Senate Committee listed in Policy Heading.

Procedures
The Budget Committee will schedule regular meetings. The Committee Chair will report Committee recommendations through the Business Council for consideration by the Faculty Senate.
